Isokoland Bubbles Over North/South Football Championship

The maiden edition of the Worldwide Entertainment Isoko North and South Football Championship formally got under way at the weekend, with Group A campaigners, Royal Eagles and Emede United, treating the fans to a six-goal thriller in the opening match at the Oleh Township Stadium.

Royal Eagles’ Edafe Godstime volleyed in the first goal of the grassroot soccer competition from close range in the 21 minute of the encounter to set stage for a floodgate of five other classic goals, as the pulsating game ended 3 – 3.

Speaking after the game, a member of the main organizing committee, Ovokerie Ibagere, praised the two teams for playing gallantly and showing the raw desire to play good football and win the match.

Ibagere said peace is vital for sustainable development in Isokoland and football is the best tool to achieve this among all communities across Isoko North and South local government areas.

“We want peace and unity among Isoko communities,” said Ibagere. “We want Isoko youths to have a purposeful mind in pursuing their dreams and shun social vices.”

“My friend, Ochuko Oduegba, and I decide to put this tournament together to foster peace, unity, and real friendship among communities here.”

“We’re going to build on this competition. It’s not a one off. It has come to stay.”

“We like the response from Isoko communities. The support is massive. We urge all teams to be law abiding in their games and play by the rules put forth by the LOC. Let’s enjoy the tournament and let Isoko come alive again.”

In the other Group A game, Olomoro United beat neighbors, Enhwe United, by a lone goal, with Flying Horse and Zenith FC settling for a 1 – 1 draw and Shining Stars of Oleh thumping Salahamalekoth 4 – 0 in Group B.

The big clash in Group C between Owhelogbo and Ozoro United unexpectedly tied at a 1 – 1 draw scoreline at the end of 90 minutes, as quiet town campaigners, Bethel United, pipped God’s Delight FC 1 – 0 in the other group pairing.

Action will continue in the competition on Wednesday, February 26, 2020, as highly dreaded Delta Eagles of Ozoro will take on Golden Stars FC in a Group D opener by 2pm at Amawe Primary School field in Ozoro.

While in the group’s other fixture, Greenville FC will play Classical FC by 4pm at the same venue.
